Invitation to attend the 2025 Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture Hosted by the Department of English

1. Topic: Multicultural Education in a Globalized World: Implications for Educational Equity

4. Speaker: Prof. Sonia Nieto (Honorary Professor Emerita, Language, Literacy, and Culture, College of Education, University of Massachussetts Amherst)

5. Speaker Introduction: Professor Sonia Nieto is Honorary Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a leading scholar in multicultural and bilingual education. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2024) and the National Academy of Education (2015), she has received nine honorary doctorates and numerous lifetime achievement awards. Her landmark book, Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education, has become one of the most influential texts in the field of education worldwide.

6. Lecture Introduction: In an era of globalization and rapid AI development, societies face growing challenges related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Professor Nieto has long advocated for education as a means to achieve social justice, envisioning schools as spaces for understanding, inclusion, and dialogue. Drawing on decades of scholarship and practice, she will discuss how multicultural education can guide educators in fostering empathy, respect, and equity across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Her insights offer valuable perspectives for Taiwan in areas such as teacher education, social inclusion, and intercultural engagement, positioning language learning as both a tool and a pathway toward mutual respect and global citizenship.
